The IPO Buddy Program is a Buddy/Mentor program designed to enable you to meet new international students and help them to transition into life in the U.S., Amherst and at UMass. Newly arrived international students need IPO Buddies LIKE YOU to answer their questions and help them to adjust to a new academic and personal life here.

Do you receive a Pell Grant? Do you want to study abroad? The Gilman International Scholarship Program is a federal scholarship program aimed specifically at Pell Grant recipients, and the students receiving this award can get $3000 - $5000 scholarship towards the cost of a study abroad program. Students applying to programs that include language study in one of the “Critical Languages” (for example, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Swahili) can potentially receive an additional award of $3000 towards the cost of the program.

We strongly advise you to draft your Gilman application essays EARLY in order to have time for feedback from advisors and polishing your final version to increase your chances of getting an award.
