Chinese University of Hong Kong 2018-2019 Budget Details:
Upon acceptance, CUHK will bill you for an Administrative fee (HK$1050), a visa fee (HK$580) and a hostel deposit (HK$1000), about US$375. This bill will be sent to you about 10 weeks before the start of the program and is due within 2 weeks of issue. Your visa process won't be started until payment and your documents are received. Upon arrival, CUHK will bill you for caution money (a deposit for using campus facilities, paid by credit card authorization, which won't be charged unless students leave outstanding fees at the end of the program) and hostel and related fees.
Housing Fee: Students share a double or triple with local CUHK students. The fee listed above includes the hostel fee, hostel related fees, hostel deposit (refundable, if you leave your room in good condition) and air-conditioning expenses.
Meals: There is no formal meal plan. Students buy meals out-of-pocket in campus cafeterias or nearby restaurants. Certain housing options at CUHK include a meal plan; the fee for the meal plan will be due upon arrival at CUHK.
Health Insurance: CUHK does not offer health insurance; students must be covered by a policy from their home country. The UMass International Travel Insurance policy that is provided to all UMass students meets CUHK requirements. Proof of insurance coverage will be required upon arrival at CUHK. Students can utilize CUHK health care facilities at discounted rates. See CUHK's webpage, "Health and Insurance" for more information. You must also remain enrolled in whatever health insurance plan you now carry through your study abroad period, and until you re-enroll at UMass/Amherst after your return. Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website for information regarding health insurance including the UMass emergency insurance policy.
Visa/Residence Fees: CUHK will apply for a student visa on your behalf based on the information you submit to them, and bill you for the visa fee (HK$530). When the visa sticker is ready, they will mail it to you directly at your home address, and then you place it into your passport, ready to go when you check in for your departure flight. You do not need to go to the Chinese Consulate to apply for your visa; DO NOT apply directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
Passport Fees: $135 for US Passport, new or renewals. Students who are applying for their passport for the first time or for a renewal passport can expect to pay application costs and cost of photos.
Local Transportation: Estimate for getting around Hong Kong using metro rail and taxi. Metro rail discounts are available for students. Also includes estimate for cost of travel to and from the airport to CUHK, on arrival and departure. CUHK will not arrange airport pickup.
Personal Expenses: This is an estimate for laundry, cellphone, toiletries, clothing, social/leisure, personal travel, etc.
Miscellaneous is the Administrative Fee of HK$1050.
