Above estimates are in US dollars using exchange rate: US $1 = ¥ 111.5. Regional students are charged a tuition fee approximately $500 more per semester than in-state students. Five College students are charged the out-of-state tuition fee. Tuition and fees are subject to change.

Housing Estimate:  Private room in  DK House Tokyo Nerima about 45 min. commute from campus.  Sophia University will send a housing bill to the student about 10 weeks before start of semester.  Housing bill will be due about 4 weeks before start of semester. 

For information on all housing options please visit:  Students are responsible for comparing the housing options at each site using the information on the host university's website, or the printed booklet from the Education Abroad Advisor.  Not all housing information is available online, so be prepared to read the printed materials.

Meals Estimate: Dormitories do not provide meals. Students must shop for and prepare their own meals in shared kitchens, or eat in cafeterias and small eateries around campus. 

Passport Fees:  Applicable if applying for a passport for the first time or for renewal passport.

Health & Liability Insurance:  Students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance Plan; premium is based on student's income for previous year.  In addition, students need to stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan they currently carry when the semester ends, through the study abroad period, and until returning to UMass/Amherst after completion of the program.  Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website ( for information regarding health insurance including the UMass insurance policy.

Visa/Residence Fees: This is the cost of sending the visa application to the Japanese Consulate by express mail and return cost also.

Passport Fees:  For students who are applying for their passport for the first time or renewing their passport.

Local Transportation:  This is an estimate for cost of commuting between housing and campus.

Educational Travel:  Estimate based on amounts spent by former UMass students for student-planned travel. 

Housing Deposit: Students will be required to pay a Security Deposit of which Y25,000 is refundable if there is no damage to the room. 

Miscellaneous:  Students are charged a one-time administrative fee of $170.

Bedding Lease:  Students have the option of renting bedding.  Fee listed is for DK House.
