Sophia University 2018-2019 Budget Details:
Regional students pay a tuition fee of approximately $500 more per semester than in-state students. Five College students are charged the out-of-state tuition fee. Tuition and fees are subject to change.
Housing Fee: The figure in the above table is for a private room in DK House Tokyo Nerima, which is about a 45-minute commute from campus. Sophia University will send a housing bill to the student about 10 weeks before start of semester. Housing bill will be due about 4 weeks before start of semester.

Housing Deposit: Students will be required to pay a Security Deposit of which Y25,000 is refundable if there is no damage to the room.
Meals: Dormitories (except Wakeijuku) do not provide meals. Students must shop for and prepare their own meals in shared kitchens, or eat in cafeterias and eateries around campus.
Visa/Residence Fees: This is the cost of sending the visa application to the Japanese Consulate by express mail and the return cost also. There is no visa fee for the Japanese student visa for US citizens.
Passport Fees: $135 for US Passport, new or renewals. Students who are applying for their passport for the first time or for a renewal passport can expect to pay application costs and cost of photos.
Health & Liability Insurance: Students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance Plan; premium is based on student's income for previous year. In addition, students need to stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan they currently carry when the semester ends, through the study abroad period, and until returning to UMass/Amherst after completion of the program. Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website for information regarding health insurance including the UMass insurance policy.
Local Transportation: This is an estimate for getting from the airport to Sophia, and also for getting around the greater Tokyo area on the subway/train
Personal Expenses: This is an estimate for laundry, cellphone, toiletries, clothing, social/leisure, personal travel, etc.
Miscellaneous: Students are charged a one-time administrative fee of $170.
Bedding Lease: Students have the option to rent bedding provided in Sophia-arranged housing.
