Fees based on exchange rate of: US $1 = Y 111.5. Regional Students pay a tuition rate of approximately $500 per semester more than in-state students. Tuition and fees are subject to change.

Housing Fee: Students are assigned to specific dormitories and pay for dormitory housing after arrival at Hokkaido University.  The student dormitories are located on or near the campus in the center of Sapporo.  Residence halls are open during vacations.  Brief descriptions are available online at:

Students are responsible for becoming familiar with the housing options at each site using the information on the host university's website, or the printed booklet from the Education Abroad Advisor.  Not all housing information is available online, so be prepared to read the printed materials.

The above estimate for housing was calculated based on the fees for a single room at International House Kita 8.

Visa/Residence Fees: This is the cost of sending the visa application to the Japanese Consulate by express mail and return cost also.

Passport Fees: Applicable if applying for a passport for the first time.  Passports should be valid for at least 6 months following the program end date.

Health & Liability Insurance: Students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance plan.  In addition, students need to stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan they now carry when the semester ends, through the study abroad period, and util re-enrolling at UMass/Amherst after completion of the program.  Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website ( for information regarding health insurance including the UMass insruance policy.

Local Transportation: This is an estimate of cost for getting from airport to city and also for getting around Sapporo on the subway/train during the period of study.
