Exchange vs non-exchange tuition & fees
The program fee listed listed above is the Trinity Non-EU Study Abroad (non-exchange) rate. UMass Amherst offers one (1) exchange scholarship per academic year. To be considered for the exchange, students must have a 3.5 GPA. Preference for the exchange scholarship is given to students studying at Trinity for the academic year and in-state students who receive financial aid. Students should inquire at IPO about the exchange scholarship. UMass may send an unlimited number of non-exchange students to Trinity each semester/year at the non exchange price listed above.
IMPORTANT: Check the exchange rate and fees, as posted by Trinity in EUR. At the time of posting, the Exchange rate was 1 EUR = 1.175 USD. This is subject to change.
Additional Tuition & Fees for Science & Engineering
Tuition at Trinity for Engineering* or Science courses is higher than Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences courses. Students who select courses in the Sciences or Engineering* will be subject to an additional USD$4000 for the semester, totaling $14,500 tuition/fees only.
*Engineering students can only study at TCD for the full year only. Some exceptions may be made on a case by case.
Semester Start-Up Programme
If you are arriving in Trinity for the spring term, you have the option to take a week-long version of Understanding Ireland, which runs in the week before normal teaching begins in January. The week-long programme offers an overview of Irish history and culture through a combination of lectures and fieldtrips. This course is optional, carries an additional cost and does not qualify for credit. Tuition for the Semester Start-Up Programme is $750 in addition to the regular semester tuition. Both are billed through the UMass Bursar's bill. Students pay their own additional housing and meals for the Semester Start-Up Programme.
Accommodation at Trinity College varies in type and price. Due to Trinity's city centre location, your first choice may not always be available. Accommodation breaks down into three types: on-campus, Trinity Hall and Trinity-certified student residences such as the Binary Hub,
Application for all Trinity College accommodation is made online. In order to apply, you must have your Trinity College Student ID number. Once you have been accepted, you will receive an official letter of offer which will include this number. Please note that you may not apply online until you have accepted your place.
Most accommodation is “self-catered,” meaning that you would buy food and cook for yourself in your flat and or eat at restaurants or cafes on/off campus.
Personal expenses include laundry, cell phone, entertainment, and incidentals.
Independent Travel Costs
Costs for independent travel (on weekends, during break) vary widely depending on choices of destination and accommodation, and frequency of travel. Make sure to take this into account.
Student Visa/Residence Permit
US passport-holders do not need visas. However, all non-EU citizens, whether visa-required or not, are subject to ordinary immigration controls at the port of entry/airport and must register with Immigration within one month of arriving in Ireland. The Immigration Officer makes the decision on who is allowed to enter Ireland. S/he will stamp your passport for either one or three months and you must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau within the time limit stamped on your passport. UMass will provide you with guidance/instructions for obtaining a residence permit, but note that it is your responsibility to obtain the appropriate visa and/or residence permit.
You will be covered by the UMass International Travel Insurance, which covers emergency and urgent care coverage and some travel services to UMass students participating in university sponsored and approved international study abroad programs. You will have to pay up front at the time of treatment for any medical services you receive and submit receipts to the UMass insurance for reimbursement.
Students are only covered while actively participating in the study abroad program. So during any semester breaks, you are still covered, however, if you choose to arrive in Ireland earlier than the official start date of their exchange or choose to extend your stay beyond the end of the semester, you are not covered. You may wish to obtain coverage for those periods not covered by the UMass plan by purchasing the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) http://www.myisic.com. The ISIC, which includes a comprehensive travel insurance policy, costs only $25 dollars and is valid for one year from date of issue. The University's international travel coverage is automatically included in your Education Abroad Fee and is intended to provide the first line of service and protection to the University's travelers. Prior to traveling, international travelers should still contact your primary personal health insurance company to make certain you understand what additional coverage you may have in place, or may want to put in place, while traveling abroad. Any additional coverage purchased would be at your own expense.

In case of a medical emergency while abroad, we strongly encourage UMass Amherst students to first turn to the International Students Office at your Irish university for help accessing local medical resources that are close at hand. This will save valuable time. We recommend that upon arrival at their program site, you familiarize yourself with the location of the campus clinic and the nearest hospital.
