Estimates are based on an exchange rate of: US $1 = Y112. Regional students pay a tuition fee of approximately $500 more per semester than in-state students. Tuition and fees are subject to change.
Housing and Meals
Homestay option: Estimates above are for homestay option.The homestays include breakfast and dinner daily, for about $2250 for the fall semester. Students must also budget about $125 per month for lunches, or $500 for the spring semester.
Dormitory option: A room at International Residence 2 will cost about $1,700, which includes internet, but does not include other utilities, which are charged monthly. Utilities will cost about $50 per month, or $200 total for the semester. Meals are not included; students must shop for and cook their own food. Students should budget an additional $500 per month, or $2000 total for for meals. Students who elect to live in a dorm should add about $1,150 to the above budget estimate.

Students are responsible for comparing the housing options at each site using the information on the host university's website, or the printed booklet from the Education Abroad Advisor. Not all housing information is available online, so be prepared to read the printed materials.
Visa/Residence Fees: This is the cost of sending the visa application to the Japanese Consulate by express mail and return cost also.
Passport Fees: Student who are applying for their passport for the first time or for a renewal passport can expect to pay application costs and cost of photos.
Health & Liability Insurance: Students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance Plan; premium is based on student's income for previous year. In addition, students need to stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan they now carry when the semester ends, through the study abroad period, and until re-enrolling at UMass/Amherst after completion of the program. Students must also enroll in a mandatory liability insurance through KGU.
Local Transportation: This is an estimated cost of commuting to campus daily.
Educational Travel: This is an estimate based on travel expense from prior participants in the program.
Miscellaneous: Amount listed includes arrival day accommodation ($80), airport pickup ($38) and Program Expenses ($95).
