Kansai Gaidai University 2018-2019 Budget Details:
Regional students pay a tuition fee of approximately $500 more per semester than in-state students. Tuition and fees are subject to change.
Housing Fee: This fee (billed by UMass) covers the cost of either dormitory OR homestay option while classes are in session during the two semesters at Kansai Gaidai.
Students are responsible for comparing the housing options at each site using the information on the host university's website, or the printed booklet from the Education Abroad Advisor. See Kansai Gaidai's "Housing" page for more information.
Housing Deposit (refundable): Students must pay this housing deposit (Y40,000) upon arrival at Kansai Gaidai. It will be refunded if there is no damage to their rooms or outstanding library books, etc.
Meals: Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner daily from their host family and a stipend from Kansai Gaidai for lunches. Dormitory students will need to pay for meals as they go, either by buying meals in the university cafeteria or by cooking for themselves.
Visa/Residence Fees: This is the cost of sending the visa application to the Japanese Consulate by express mail and the return cost also. There is no visa fee for the Japanese student visa for US citizens.
Passport Fees: $135 for US Passport, new or renewals. Students who are applying for their passport for the first time or for a renewal passport can expect to pay application costs and cost of photos.
Health & Liability Insurance: Students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance Plan. The premium is based on student's income for previous year. Alternatively, students may consider purchasing the International Student Identity Card (ISIC), http://www.myisic.com. The ISIC, which includes a comprehensive travel insurance policy, costs only $22 dollars and is valid for one year from date of issue. In addition, students need to stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan they now carry when the semester ends, through the study abroad period, and until returning to UMass/Amherst after completion of the program. Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website for information regarding health insurance including the UMass insurance policy.
Local Transportation: This is an estimate for getting from the airport to Hirakata, and also for getting around the greater Osaka area on the subway/train for Homestay students. Dormitory students will not have daily commuting costs and should budget $150-$200 for local transportation.
Personal Expenses: This is an estimate for laundry, cellphone, toiletries, clothing, social/leisure, personal travel, etc.
