Costs for Educational Travel vary widely depending on choices of destination and accommodation, and frequency of travel.  Plan to add these costs to the above budget.

For US citizens, Student Entry Clearance (visa) is required only for students studying more than 6 months, or if students wish to work while in the UK. The cost is approximately $475. Single-semester students are not required to obtain a visa, but will enter the UK as "Student Visitors," providing documentation (acceptance letter, evidence of funds, UMass transcript etc.) to UK Border Officials upon entry to the UK. There is no cost for Student Visitors.

UCL exchange for Linguistics may be for single semesters or full academic year.

About Health Insurance while you are in the UK/abroad:

If you will be a participant in your exchange for longer than 6 months, you will be eligible for full health insurance coverage while in the UK under the National Health Service of Britain.  In general, specialist care for pre-existing conditions may not be covered.  If you are in the UK for a semester, less than 6 months, you are not covered by the British National Health plan. You are covered by the UMass International Travel Insurance package, which covers emergency and urgent care coverage and some travel services to UMass students participating in university sponsored and approved international study abroad programs. If you are not covered by the British NHS (i.e., in the UK for less than 6 months as a student, or while you’re traveling outside the UK), you will have to pay up front at the time of treatment for any medical services you receive and submit receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement.

The University's international travel coverage is intended to provide the first line of service and protection to the University's travelers. Prior to traveling, international travelers should still contact your primary personal health insurance company to make certain you understand what additional coverage you may have in place, or may want to put in place, while traveling abroad. Any additional coverage purchased would be at your own expense.  See attached insurance summary and card. You are encouraged to contact CHARTIS/AIU Assist for more details on benefits.

Students are only covered while actively participating in the study abroad program.  So during any semester breaks, you are still covered, however, if you choose to arrive in the UK earlier than the official start date of their exchange or choose to extend your stay beyond the end of the semester, you are not covered. You may wish to obtain coverage for those periods not covered by the UMass plan by purchasing the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) The ISIC, which includes a comprehensive travel insurance policy, costs only $22 dollars and is valid for one year from date of issue.

In case of a medical emergency while abroad, we strongly encourage UMass Amherst students to first turn to the International Students Office at your UK university for help accessing local medical resources that are close at hand. This will save valuable time. We recommend that upon arrival at their program site, you familiarize yourself with the location of the campus clinic and the nearest hospital.
