Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 2018-2019 Budget Details:
Upon acceptance, HKUST will bill you an Exchange fee (~HK $9,400), which includes the accommodation (housing) fee, visa application fee, and compulsory travel insurance fee. This bill will be sent to you about 10 weeks before the start of the program and is due within 2 weeks of issue. Your visa process won't be started until payment and your documents are received.
Housing: Students share a double or triple dormitory room and can request a local, non-local or exchange student roommate. This housing estimate does not include cost of laundry or air conditioning, and must be paid in full about 12 weeks in advance of the start of each semester.
Meals: There is no meal plan; students pay out of pocket at campus cafeterias or nearby restaurants.
Health & Liability Insurance: HKUST requires students to purchase the HKUST Compulsory Travel Insurance, which does not cover pre-existing conditions. Payment for the insurance is due about 10 weeks in advance of the start of the term of study. In addition, you must stay enrolled in whatever health insurance plan you now carry when the semester ends, through your study abroad period, and until you re-enroll at UMass/Amherst after your return. Please visit "Health & Safety" on the IPO website for information regarding health insurance including the UMass travel accident and emergency insurance policy.
Visa/Residence Fees: Students will apply directly to HKUST for their visas; not the Hong Kong Immigration Authority. The visa fee is about $75 and is due about 10 weeks before the start of the semester. As part of the visa application, students must show proof of funds available for the full semester of living expenses, about US$3500, via a recent bank statement. If the bank statement is in a parent or guardian's name, the account holder must also sign a "Confirmation of Financial Support" and provide a copy of his or her passport. A Hong Kong visa does not allow entry to mainland China; students wishing to visit mainland China should research the Chinese visa application process and consider applying in the US before departure to Hong Kong.
Passport Fees: $135 for US Passport, new or renewals. Students who are applying for their passport for the first time or for a renewal passport can expect to pay application costs and cost of photos.
Local Transportation: Estimate for getting around Hong Kong using metro rail and taxi. Metro rail discounts are available for students. Also includes estimate for cost of travel to and from the airport to HKUST, on arrival and departure. HKUST will not arrange airport pickup.
Personal Expenses: This is an estimate for laundry, cellphone, toiletries, clothing, social/leisure, personal travel, etc.
Educational Excursion: HKUST offers optional activities and tours of Hong Kong for HKD $50-100 each. Students sign up and pay after arrival.
