Program Description:

Byron Bay near LismoreThe SCU Lismore campus is located at Australia's best address, the north coast of New South Wales. This idyllic region is famous for its wonderful natural environment. The rainforest, unspoiled beaches and colorful lifestyle are a magnet for travelers from around the world.

Lismore has the services of a large city, but with a far more relaxed lifestyle. Dairy and beef farms, macadamia nut, tea-tree, banana and sugarcane plantations, as well as vestiges of an ancient subtropical forest surround the town.

The countryside is lush, alternating between spacious river flats and rolling wooded ridges and hills. In the higher country where many of the villages are located, there are excellent bush walks, picnic spots and scenery.

Looking North from Lismore you can see the Nightcap Ranges, the edge of the ancient caldera of a once gigantic volcano-all that remains is the volcano's core, Mt Warning, which is visible from the higher points in Lismore.

Lismore is perfectly located only 45 minutes from Byron Bay and 90 minutes by car south of the Gold Coast. Byron Bay, Australia's most easterly point, is justifiably famous worldwide.

It offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle set amongst some of Australia's best swimming and surfing beaches, with whale-watching, scuba diving and hang-gliding as some of its many attractions.

Program Overview/Academics

At Southern Cross University (SCU) you will be directly enrolled with Australian students. University of Massachusetts Amherst students may apply in fields for which they have sufficient background and must meet necessary prerequisites for certain courses.

Students in the past have recommended taking courses at the 100 or 200 level. Unlike the U.S. university system, universities in Australia offer upper-level courses at the 100 to 200 level. Courses at the 300 level tend to be rather advanced, much like our graduate courses, and may not be suitable for you, especially if you have never had a course in the particular department. However, you may request a 300-level course if you really feel it necessary and appropriate. You should plan to take three to four classes which are each worth 4 UMass University credits. Thus, taking four classes will give you 16 UMass credits per term. You may not take fewer than three classes or more than four classes at the university per term.
