Program Description:

Queensland CampusAt the University of Queensland (UQ) St. Lucia, you will be directly enrolled with Australian students. University of Massachusetts Amherst students may apply in fields for which they have sufficient background and must meet necessary prerequisites for certain courses.

Location

Famous for its great weather, exciting events and cultural scene, Brisbane (pop.1.8 million) has a sophisticated, warm and friendly charm. Brisbane is the State Capital of Queensland and is one of those rare cities built around people and lifestyle. The sub-tropical climate, with bright sunny days and balmy nights, is reflected in the warm welcome visitors receive from the million or so people who live in the greater Brisbane area. Within an hour of the city centre are the fishing and sailing waters of Moreton Bay, scenic country drives, and the beaches of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.  The University of Queensland's St. Lucia campus is considered by many to be Australia's most attractive. Located seven kilometers from the heart of Brisbane on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields.

Academics

Students in the past have recommended taking courses at the 100 or 200 level. Unlike the U.S. university system, universities in Australia offer upper-level courses at the 100 to 200 Queensland Courtlevel. Courses at the 300 level tend to be rather advanced, much like our graduate courses, and may not be suitable for you, especially if you have never had a course in the particular department. However, you may request a 300-level course if you really feel it necessary and appropriate.

You should plan to take three to four classes which are each worth 4 UMass University credits. Thus, taking four classes will give you 16 UMass credits per term. You may not take fewer than three classes or more than four classes at the university per term.

UQ Course Database - This link will take you into the course database at the University of Queensland. Start here to search for classes you might want to take while abroad. Keep in mind that you should only search for classes offered during the semester you will be abroad.

Semester 1 = UMass Spring semester
Semester 2 = UMass Fall semester

Living Arrangements

UMass students can choose between housing options in the Brisbane city center as well as in the suburb of St. Lucia right near the university.

Semester in Australia
UMass Amherst works with a former Boston resident who now lives in Brisbane. Ann Wadsworth worked for UQ International for many years and now runs a company that assists students studying abroad with accommodations, airport pickup, flights, and optional excursions to Sydney in pre-arrivals.  We highly recommend this option!

Students may also choose to work directly with UQ Accommodations Office in order to secure housing prior to arrival.
