Wollongong, (pronounced Wool-n-gong), is the gateway to the south coast of New South Wales. Wollongong, population 219,750, is Australia's most livable regional city located just 50 miles south of Sydney. Wollongong is connected to Sydney through a scenic coastal road and rail route which takes between 90 and 120 minutes, and between 70 and 90 minutes via main roads. Known affectionately as "the Gong," Wollongong is a city with a long history of mining and industry, with coal mines, steelworks and an industrial port.
The city is also a regional center for the South Coast fishing industry. Wollongong is large enough to offer all the entertainment facilities and conveniences of the city, yet small enough to retain the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of a coastal community. Wollongong's size also makes it easy to navigate. The University campus is less than five kilometers from the center of the city and beaches, and is easily accessible by public transport from all parts of the city. The name Wollongong is believed to mean "sound of the sea" in the local Aboriginal language, although other explanations have been offered, such as "great feast of fish."
Course Database - This link will take you into the course database at the University of Wollongong. You can start here to search for classes you want to take while abroad. Keep in mind that you should search only for classes offered during the semester you will be abroad. (UMass Spring = Semester 1, UMass Fall = Semester 2)
Students in the past have recommended taking courses at the 100 or 200 level. Unlike the U.S. university system, universities in Australia offer upper-level courses at the 100 to 200 level. Courses at the 300 level tend to be rather advanced, much like our graduate courses, and may not be suitable for you, especially if you have never had a course in the particular department. However, you may request a 300-level course if you really feel it necessary and appropriate. You should plan to take three to four classes which are each worth 4 UMass University credits. Thus, taking four classes will give you 16 UMass credits per term. You may not take fewer than three classes or more than four classes at the university per term.
