Program Description:
The University of Limerick is located on beautifully landscaped grounds on the banks of the River Shannon to the east of the ancient city of Limerick.  The university was founded as a technical college in 1972 and became a full university in 1989.  The campus is the academic center of a 500-acred international technological park with business, research and educational organizations.  Students at Limerick have access to the extensive information systems and facilities of the campus, including the library, student center, and the modern athletic complex.

Location

The city of Limerick lies on the River Shannon and is the largest city on the west coast of Ireland.  It is enjoying a revival of building and development of a vibrant commercial and cultural scene.  Remains of castles, fortresses and city walls provide a reminder of the Viking and Norman rulers of Limerick's past. Its location on the west coast makes it a great home base for windsurfing, sea kayaking, and traveling to the western coasts of Countries Clare, Galway, and Kerry. The city is near Shannon airport, which is a hub for travel to other Irish and European destinations, and Dublin is just a few hours away by train.

Academics

The university has structured all courses as semester-long modules, and the academic calendar conforms most closely to its U.S. counterparts. Subject areas of unusual strength are Engineering, Computer Science, Equine Science and Sports Science (available to majors only). Limerick has also gathered a host of Irish scholars to disseminate a broad-based knowledge of Irish history, literature, arts, culture, politics and Irish language.  This program offers a unique opportunity to study Gaelic at a beginner's level, with field trips to local cultural sites included.  Applicants should be rising juniors or seniors with a 3.0 gpa and background in the area of study.  Limerick allows students to take classes across the curriculum if pre-requisites are met. Explore the Limerick Book of Modules for courses.

Living Arrangements

Housing for international visiting students is provided in Limerick's newly constructed Residential Villages alongside Irish students.  Each complex has six to eight single study bedrooms with a shared kitchen-living area, cable TV, and computer network links.  Common rooms and recreational facilities are also available in each complex.  Meals may be purchased in a variety of cafeterias and restaurants on campus.  You will automatically become a member of the student union and can join your choice of seventy union-sponsored clubs and societies.  Limerick boasts outstanding athletic facilities with a University Arena, which includes a gymnasium, exercise and dance studios, indoor tracks, and 50-meter swimming pool, diving pool, tennis and squash courts and forty acres of playing fields.  A new Rugby Study Abroad program is being launched this year. More information about accommodation at Limerick.
