Lancaster University was founded in 1964, and it now hosts over 10,000 students.  It offers both easy access to the city of Lancaster and the advantages of campus life.  The University campus, with academic, residence, sports, social and recreational facilities, is in the countryside just three miles south of the city and has a view extending to the sea.  Set in 360 acres of land with playing fields and woods, the University buildings are spread along the ridge of a hill.  On campus are shops, banks, a post office and the Students' Union Office, as well as accommodation for over 6,000 students.  Because of its proximity to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay, Lancaster is an ideal center for a wide range of outdoor pursuits. Explore the Lancaster University Study Abroad Brochure and Lancaster Study Abroad Information Sheet 2016-17.

Lancaster lies on the west coast of Britain, roughly equidistant between London and Edinburgh (3 hours away by high-speed train). Liverpool and Manchester (which has the nearest international airport) are an hour away.  The City of Lancaster, with a population of 50,000, is located at the end of the Lune River Valley, just four miles from the sea. Lancaster is a relatively small but buzzing city with independent boutiques as well as high street outlets, plenty of places to eat, drink and dance and an annual literature festival, cinemas and a theater.

University of LancasterLancaster allows study abroad students to take a mix of arts and science courses and to take courses from a number of different departments, subject to the students having the appropriate qualifications and timetable restraints.  Most formal teaching takes place during Michelmas (Autumn) and Lent (Spring) terms, but some courses continue until half-way through the Summer term.  All subjects are examined in the Summer term, however special assessments are arranged for students leaving in December. Students normally take 12 credits in Autumn and 16-20 credits in the spring and summer terms. Autumn or year students can choose to add on the Lancaster International Summer Programme.pdf, British Culture, Language, and Society, 1800-present from mid-August to mid-September for 4 US credits and an additional £2,250 fee. Lancaster can arrange independent study for study abroad students.
