Program Description:

Alliance MBS
The Victoria University of Manchester, founded in 1851, was the first of England's great civic universities and has been regarded as one of the country's top institutions for both teaching and research.  The University of Manchester, formed in 2004 from the merger of the Victoria University with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) now ranks as the largest single-site higher education institution in the country.  The Alliance Manchester Business School, formerly part of UMIST, is considered one of the most prestigious business schools in the UK.  With around 2,000 students and a teaching staff of 190, the Alliance MBS provides an international and progressive environment for academics linking research with service to both business and the public sector.

Location

Manchester Business SchoolSituated in the North West of England, almost equidistant between London and Edinburgh, Manchester lies at the center of an excellent air, road and rail network.  The city combines the grandeur of its Victorian architectural and business heritage with the vigor and excitement of an international metropolis which has one of the largest student populations in Europe. Manchester is surrounded by national parks, with Snowdonia to the west, the Peak District to the south, the Lake District to the north and the Yorkshire Dales to the east.  Quiet market towns and villages are within easy traveling distance.  Manchester is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and offers tremendous opportunities for nightlife, the arts, and sporting events.

Academics

Students attending in Semester 1 are able to choose from a selection of Semester 1 and Full-Year courses.  Students attending Semester 2 only will have a shorter list of classes to choose from, since there is no entry into Full-Year courses at the mid point. The full workload for a semester is 60 MBS credits = 18 UMass credits (6 classes), however exchange students may take 5 classes for 60 MBS credits = 15 UMass credits.  There is a wide range of courses in management, finance, and marketing, however UMass students should have had the introductory courses in these areas before applying to MBS.

Students should choose from the MBS courses offered to exchange students
The course listings are updated every year in March/April.

See the Fact Sheet 2017-18.pd for information about academics and the application process.

Living Arrangements

The University Accommodation Office will endeavour to allocate accommodation to students studying at Alliance MBS for a Full Year, Semester One or Semester Two from University Halls. Students cannot be guaranteed a specific Hall or the type of accommodation but can indicate a preference between a Self-Catered or a Catered Hall. The first semester contract terminates at the end of January and the full cost for the semester will need to be paid even if a student is permitted to finish at Alliance MBS in December. The second semester contract terminates in June.

Students can apply online for accommodation only after an acceptance letter from Alliance Manchester Business School has been issued with a UID number. It is essential that once an online application has been submitted that you check emails on a regular basis as an offer is only held for a very short period of time.

Further information about university accommodation is available at the University's accommodation pages.
