Program Overview

Yonsei University is a large research university with 17,600 undergraduates and 11,800 graduate students, 19 Colleges and 18 graduate programs, 131 research institutes and centers.  Yonsei offers over 700 courses taught in English throughout its curriculum, and exchange students can easily choose among the 50+ offered each semester in the areas of Korean Studies, Politics, Science, Engineering, Business, Economics, International Trade, etc.  This is a direct enrollment program in which you are taking classes alongside other international students (4,500 total on campus) and Korean students.

Founded in 1885 by Christian missionaries, Yonsei has grown tremendously and is considered among the top 4 universities in Korea.  A Global MBA program taught in English is available to graduate exchange students and advanced undergraduates.  The campus is located in a central part of the national capital, but has a spacious and wooded campus perched on moderate hills overlooking the city of Seoul.

Located in the Sodaemun-gu section of Seoul, Yonsei Universitythere are several prestigious universities in Sinchon ("University Town") area, including Yonsei.  There are plenty of shops and restaurants in easy reach of the campus.  The campus is large with dramatic architecture including many Western-style  and Asian style buildings.   Subway and bus lines are convenient to campus and the main downtown area of Seoul including the National Assembly Building is just 20 minutes away by subway.

Yonsei University strives to offer as many courses as possible in English in a wide variety of disciplines.  Students who are fluent in Korean are also allowed to enroll in courses taught in Korea with the approval of the instructor.  Korean language courses are also offered through the Korean Language Institute at 6 levels including beginner.

UMass students typically earn 12-18 credits a semester in a variety of fields and can usually satisfy some General Education requirements.  You can also consider applying to the Yonsei Summer Program which offers 80 courses taught in English during a 6 week program.

Living Arrangements

The main facility is the International House which accommodates 240 students in double rooms with separate wings for women and men.  The main language of the dormitory is English.  Exchange students are not required to live in the International House and those whose relatives live in Seoul may want to reside with their families.  Students can sign up for a Buddy Family program to experience Korean homelife on selected weekends, or Language Exchange Partners.  Several other clubs encourage international students to join them as they are a main vehicle for meeting Korean students.

The Global Lounge is an international gathering place with wireless internet access, comfortable lounge areas with televisions and offers convenient access to some of the student services.
