It's not just rainforest and reef, though, this region has remote outback landscapes, a rich history and Aboriginal heritage, and the vibrant yet laid back towns of Townsville and Cairns. I chose to study abroad at James Cook University in Townsville for two reasons: its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and its selection of unique marine science classes. My favorite class included a weekend-long field trip to Orpheus island, a research station out on the GBR. I was jotting down some observations when I decided to take this photo. I waded off the edge of the reef; this is looking back across the reef flat towards where my classmates were surveying. Some live coral is visible in the foreground.
