Overview

This wonderful opportunity for Nursing majors is being offered by the University of Oviedo in Oviedo, Spain.  This intensive summer program is in the area of medical Spanish. The course has been uniquely designed based off the most current research on the communication needs of Latino patients and medical professionals in the United States. Students will not only learn standard medical terminology and grammar, but also common variants (euphemisms, slang, etc.) and cultural aspects that can affect health and communication. Additionally, students are given the opportunity to participate in a practicum in order to apply what they are learning in the classroom to a real, medical context.

Academics
The program is specifically intended for Nursing students to improve their linguistic competency in Spanish, including specialized medical terminology.  Additionally, the program satisfies portions of the UMass Spanish Healthcare Certificate requirements.  Courses: Intensive Spanish for Healthcare Professionals (6 UMass Credits)

Location

The city of Oviedo is one of the most important centers of cultural activity in the northwest of Spain. With nearly 200,000 inhabitants it is also the capital of the "Principado de Asturias," and the geographical, administrative, commercial, and cultural center of the region. The climate in Asturias is quite mild, except in the high mountains, and often rainy. The mountains and villages along the coast are ideal places to vacation. There are a number of ski resorts in the region. Oviedo has a very active cultural life with concerts, operas, conferences, congresses, museums, libraries, exhibitions, etc.

The University of Oviedo was founded in 1574 and began its teaching activities in 1608. Today, as it celebrates its four hundredth anniversary, it has become a prestigious institution. Over the past twenty-five years, the university has developed a solid and efficient infrastructure fully integrated in the university framework.

Students will live in the Centro OVIDA in either a shared or a single room for an additional fee.  The OVIDA Intergenerational Center houses elderly and those with physical and mental impairments.  Students will take their medical Spanish class at the OVIDA Center and also be able to participate in a practicum.
